WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
The Hawks looked to get back in the win column after a tough loss to Susquehanna on the opening day of the Mayor's Cup.
-
Hartwick was faced with early pressure from the Pacers, Kayla Grassi (Montgomery, N.Y.) was able to clear a dangerous ball looming in the box, awarding Marywood the first corner of the game.
-
The Royal Blue and White displayed their ability to clear the ball with success, clearing the first of many Pacer corners.
-
After another corner and an offsides call on Marywood, the Hawks formulated a counter attack with an array of passing. Nicasia Santos (Flemington, N.J.) was able to float a ball over the top to Millie Caldon (Gilmanton, N.H.) who used her speed to get around the Pacer defender and found the back of the net with a wonderfully placed ball, just past the keepers reach for the first score of the game as well as her first collegiate goal.
-
Meghan Perry (Otego, N.Y.) was able to get her outstretched glove on a promising Pacer shot to keep the Hawks in front.
-
Hartwick battled for control of the midfield, having several players cut attacks short and give their team a chance to make something happen.
-
Marywood worked their way into Hartwick's final third but struggled to make anything happen as the Hawks suffocated the Pacers to just two shots, despite earning six corners in the half.
-
A Pacer attacker looked to spot an open attacker slipping into the box but the pass was intercepted by Reilly Groff (Monroe, N.Y.) and cleared as Marywood's offensive woes continued.
-
Perry would make another brilliant save in goal, this time denying a missile destined for the top right corner in the closing minutes of the half.
-
Marywood's sixth and final corner of the half would be cleared away as the Hawks wrapped up a solid first half, looking to up the momentum in the second half.
-
An early foul by the Hawks put them in a tough spot to open up the half as the Pacers rattled off three consecutive corners. Perry and her defense stood tall on each attempt, clearing the ball out of the box and blocking any possible shots or passes.
-
After an unsuccessful Hawk attack, Marywood continued to pressure the Hawks, posting two more corners as well as two more shots on goal that were stonewalled by Perry.
-
The Hawks almost found the back of the net once again at the 70 minute mark with Caldon executing a near perfect cross to an incoming Grace Byrne (Lynbrook, N.Y.) who sent a rocket that unfortunately found the Marywood's keeper's hands.
-
Hartwick continued to lock down on defense, only allowing two more Pacer shots that were not on target.
-
Coach Knapp's squad made the most of their opportunities, converting on their lone shot attempt in the first half as well, making Marywood work extremely hard for anything in the final third, handing the Pacers their first loss of the season.
-
The Hawks placed 2nd in the Mayor's Cup Tournament behind Susquehanna University, Meghan Perry, Grace Byrne and Trinity Irizarry (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN KNAPP
"I couldn't be more proud of the way the group bounced back from a tough result yesterday. We talked about showing our resilience and grit and we certainly showed it today. The work the group put in with and for each other is a result of everything we've been talking about through preseason until now. Each game we've continued to build on our successes and showed the willingness to learn from areas we can improve on. Back to back days, early in the season is never easy and they should be very proud of themselves."
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will return to Elmore Field as they begin Empire 8 conference play against the SUNY Geneseo Knights at 2 PM on Saturday, September 14th.
