BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Hawks were nearly perfect on the defensive end in this game against SUNY Cortland, with Ava Reynolds in goal making 5 great saves. Brianna Cottrell (Holland, N.Y.) would also snag a crucial defensive save in the third to deny a shot from the Red Dragons. Cortland in comparison would snag a single save.

  • Despite Cortland holding a 16-5 edge in shots, the Hawks were able to pull out a stellar victory. Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was integral to the Hawks' success, picking up a goal and an assist. Katelyn Klotz (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) would earn the assist on the game-winning goal.

  • Kendal Woolley (Blue Point, N.Y.) also stood out for the Hawks as she snagged a goal, more specifically her second goal in two contests.

  • This win was historic for the Hawks, marking their 1st victory over the Red Dragons since 1996, and their 4th victory against them in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a fierce non-conference match up between the Hawks and the Red Dragons at Head Coach Erin Autera's alma mater of SUNY Cortland. The first quarter was action-packed in the midfield with Angioletti in particular playing a major role in the Hawks maintaining possession. Despite both teams playing directly end to end, Angioletti would be the only player in the first quarter to post a shot, though the Red Dragons' keeper would shut it down.

The second quarter saw more offensive opportunities for the hosting Red Dragons as they claimed the first two penalty corners of the game and posted six shots. Reynolds and the 'Wick defense stood tall, however, as Reynolds would tally three saves and her defense would be credited with blocking two shots. The Hawks, on the other hand, could not garner much in the second quarter, though Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) would manage one shot despite it deflecting off the stick of a Red Dragon. The same could be said for the third quarter, where Klotz would only get one shot off compared to the four from Cortland.

Momentum picked up in the fourth when Woolley would find the back of the cage off a redirect from Angioletti only two minutes in. However, Cortland would answer back straight away with a rebound goal off a penalty corner to knot them at 1-1. Despite each time picking up another penalty corner attempt, the regulation game would end in a tie, bringing the two teams to overtime play.

Cortland would dominate overtime play with three shot attempts off of two penalty corners, but the Hawks defense was immovable to force double-overtime. Here the Hawks found their groove, drawing a foul in the attacking circle to force a crucial penalty corner opportunity. Klotz sent a stellar insert to Angioletti, who would blast a rocket of a shot from the top of the circle to secure the winning goal and bring the Hawks to an incredible road victory over powerhouse SUNY Cortland.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will return to conference play at home on Saturday, October 18th at 2PM to face off against St. John Fisher University as well as celebrate their two seniors in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
