HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks dominated the first set and secured the first six points after Geneseo was unable to respond to some incredible serves from Sophia Palladino (Owego, N.Y.). Despite the Knights making slow progress to regain some points back, the trio of Gracias, Swartz and Walker were dynamic on the offense to keep their lead strong and end the first set 25-18.
The second set reflected the first, with the Hawks gaining a solid lead early, although Geneseo would gain enough momentum to eventually knot the score at 7-7. However, Mary Kinnane (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) once again displayed her strength on service to deliver two aces off of three serves while Walker followed up with back-to-back kills. Continuous errors spelled trouble for the Knights, who struggled to catch up with the Hawks, as Kinanne would bury her third service ace of the night to give 'Wick the second set.
Despite leading in the third set by seven points at one time, the Hawks gave up their lead off of several errors and Geneseo aces. Despite fighting hard and showcasing several kills from Gracias, the Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit and gave up the third set 19-25.
Swartz and Hornick combined in the fourth set, with Swartz earning three successful kills off of Hornick's assists to set the pace, although errors continued to plague the Royal Blue and White. Geneseo would take the lead at 6-10 for only the second time in the match, but the Hawks were able to regain some stamina with Walker and Gracias again leading the offensive charge. In a neck-and-neck battle until the end, the Hawks were soon able to come out on top and take the win in four sets.
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will close out their regular season with an away contest against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on November 1st at 2 PM.
