HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick Volleyball geared up for an important conference matchup in their regular season finale, going head to head with the Golden Eagles of Brockport as the winner would take the No.2 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 championship tournament.
Set scores were 25–17, 25–21, 21–25, and 25–23 as the Blue and White improved to 19–10 overall.
Lucille Walker (Ithaca, N.Y.) (15 kills, .367 hitting) and Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) (16 kills, .277) powered the Hartwick attack, while setter Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) dished out 38 assists and added nine digs. Isabella Gracias (Oneonta, N.Y.) chipped in seven kills, and Sophia Palladino (Owego, N.Y.) provided three kills and 10 digs in a strong two-way effort. Defensively, the Hawks tallied 43 digs and 10 total blocks, anchored by Walker and Swartz at the net.
Hartwick came out strong, dominating the opening set 25–17 before holding off a late Brockport push in the second to go up 2–0. The Golden Eagles fought back to claim the third, 25–21, but Hartwick responded in the fourth with clutch points down the stretch to close the match 25–23 and seal the victory.
The win caps an outstanding Empire 8 campaign for the Hawks, who will enter postseason play as the No. 2 seed after finishing as the No.3 seed last year.
