HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick Women's Tennis team were handed their first home loss of the season, falling to regional powerhouse RIT to snap their five-match winning streak.
After a dominant stretch of five consecutive sweeps over Empire 8 opponents, the Hawks faced a tough test against the Tigers. RIT set the tone early with 6–2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the opening point. Despite the early setback, Hartwick finished doubles play on a high note as the pairing of Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) and Maddi Morrison (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) battled to a gritty 7–5 victory at No. 3.
In singles action, the Tigers maintained control. Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) dropped the opening match at No. 3, while Van Valkenburgh fell 6–2, 6–1 at No. 4 following her long doubles effort. At No.1, Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.) showcased trademark toughness—after being blanked in the first set, she rallied to push RIT's Maya McDaniel to the brink before falling 7–5 in the second. RIT would go on to clinch the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles.
Morrison provided a bright spot for the Hawks, storming back after a 6–1 first-set loss to take the second set 6–2 and edge out her opponent 10–7 in the tiebreaker—earning Hartwick's lone singles victory on the day.
Despite the non-conference loss, the Hawks still secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming 2025 Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship, with Nazareth's 5–2 win over St. John Fisher sealing Hartwick's fourth straight regular season title under Coach Butcher.
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
