BY THE NUMBERS

  • Despite Hartwick outshooting Elmira 14-9 and holding a 6-4 edge in penalty corner kicks, the Hawks would be unable to get a goal on the board.

  • Jelani Usim (Kingston, Jamaica) in goal for 'Wick had a nice game despite the setback, with 4 saves. The Soaring Eagles' keeper, on the other hand, would make 6 saves to ultimately shut out the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First-years Mathieu Six (Antwerp, Belgium) and Andres Ordonez Acosta (Estado de Mexico, Mexico) attempted to start the Hawks off strong with a combined three shot attempts in the first ten minutes into the match, though their efforts would be unsuccessful. The Hawks were able to stifle two penalty corner kick attempts from the Soaring Eagles, while Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tex.) and Nick Nowak (Shoreham, N.Y.) tried their luck on the offensive drive although nothing came to fruition for the Royal Blue and White. Nowak would come the closest to getting the Hawks on the winning column, but Elmira's keeper would tally up another two saves to stifle any efforts. Despite several more shot attempts, both goalkeepers would hold the match scoreless going into the second half.

After having outshot the Soaring Eagles 10-1 in the first half, the Hawks attempted to come out with new energy and focus in the second, tacking up four more shots against the home team until the 86th minute when Elmira was able to slip one past Usim to take the lead. Both teams battled hard in the final four minutes, but the Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit and ultimately fell 1-0 to Elmira.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

"It was tough to be on the wrong side of the result today. We put so much into it and there were many positives to take away. It's time to rectify this on Saturday. That's all we can do."
