WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
Hartwick returned to the courts after capturing the 2024-25 Empire 8 Championship over SUNY Geneseo in the fall, beginning the spring with a tough test in the William Smith Herons.
-
With non-conference rules in place, doubles would be played to six and only one point would be awarded to the team who won at least two of the three matches.
-
Alexandra Krasinska (Pine Island, N.Y.) and Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) began play at the one spot, going back and forth with Grace Magna and Haley Levine of the Herons.
-
While Krasinska and Leggieri battled at the one spot, Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) and Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.) began play against William Smith's #2 doubles team and Ryann Ashby (Malta, N.Y.) and Colleen Marsh (Marcellus, N.Y.) got underway at third doubles.
-
William Smith set the tone early, taking the two and three doubles spot before Krasinska and Leggieri were eventually outlasted 4-6 as the Herons earned the doubles point.
-
The Hawks were unable to take control in singles play as the deep Herons roster caused trouble for the squad, Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) battled at the six spot, taking four games in the second set but was edged out.
-
Leggieri was defeated at the five spot, suffering only her second loss in singles play this season, still holding strong with 11 wins this season, second most on the team.
-
Vanuga and Ashby fell at the three and four slots as the Herons continued to roll as they secured the match victory.
-
Samantha Lanzty battled against Natalie Haythorn, just being edged out 5-7 in the first set. Lanzty continued to fight hard at the #2 spot but was defeated 3-6 in the second set.
-
Krasinska went head to head with Levine at the #1 slot, falling quickly in the first set by a score of 1-6 but Krasinska was not rattled. Alexandra bounced back with a dominant 6-0 victory in the second set, sending the match into a tiebreaker. Krasinska was able to shut the door on Levine, winning the tiebreaker 10-1 to pick up the lone victory of the afternoon.
