Softball Stumbles in Twin Losses to Gators

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hawks drop two to the Russell Sage Gators at home in a sunny conference doubleheader Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS

  • Game 1 Score: Russell Sage 5 Hartwick 0

  • Game 2 Score: Russell Sage 7 Hartwick 2

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: Russell Sage (12-18, 8-6 Empire 8) Hartwick (6-24, 1-15 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Sage opened Game 1 with a single, but would conclude the first inning scoreless. The Hawks would not manage a hit.

  • Emily Holladay (Hancocks Bridge, N.J.) would grab two bases after a walk and successfully stealing second, but would be left on base.

  • Sage would stack three more successful hits over the next three innings, though the Hawks' fielding would continuously strand their runners on base without scoring.

  • The Gators would explode in the fifth inning, however, with four runs off of three hits and taking advantage of some errors from the Hawks.

  • Sage would collect another six hits in the game, though they would not score again until the top of the seventh when the Hawks gave up a triple and a single to end the game.

GAME TWO

  • The Gators hoped to build off of their momentum from the first game, coming in hot with two doubles and a triple that allowed them to get two runs on the board in the first.

  • The second inning would also allow Sage to tack on two more hits and another run.

  • The Hawks would not muster anything until the second inning after a drought of hits in the first game, with both Brianna Blake (Mechanicville, N.Y.) and Casey O'Connor (Albany, N.Y.) grabbing a single. However, the Hawks would leave three on base going into the third.

  • Both teams would only get one hit each in the third inning.

  • The fourth inning was shaky for the Hawks as several errors allowed another run, and a double soon brought another.

  • Blake would once again get a hit on the boards for the Hawks in the fourth, hitting a double to left center, but they still would not score.

  • The Hawks gave up nothing to the Gators in the fifth, and O'Connor would once again pick up a single.

  • The Gators would come back with two more hits and two more runs in the sixth.

  • The Hawks then came alive, with Samantha Moore (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) singling through the left side. Blake would also pick up her third hit of the day with a single down the center.

  • Samantha Osborne (Schenevus, N.Y.) would pinch run for Moore, scoring off a single from Bella Martinez (Port Byron, N.Y.).

  • A double from Autumn Millington (Westmoreland, N.Y.) would send Martinez home before the Gators put a stop to Hartwick's crusade.

  • Sage could not put anything else on the board, but did manage 2 more hits to end the game.

  • Despite a Hawks comeback in the sixth, it would not be enough to bring down the Gators.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will head back on the road on Wednesday to resume play with the Elmira College Soaring Eagles after a rain delay had previously caused a postponement. Game 1 will pick up at the bottom of the fifth with the score tied 2-2, starting at 4:00PM.
