Hartwick Falls to St. John Fisher in Home Conference Series

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hartwick Hawks Softball program continued their Empire 8 conference schedule, facing off against a tough Cardinals squad, falling in both contests on Sunday afternoon at Cooperstown All-Star Village.

THE BASICS

  • Game 1 Score: St. John Fisher 8 Hartwick 0

  • Game 2 Score: St. John Fisher 13 Hartwick 0

  • Location: Oneonta, N.Y.

  • Records: St. John Fisher (12-9, 5-1 Empire 8) Hartwick (5-13, 0-4 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks prepared for their second consecutive home series, going head to head with a loaded Cardinals squad,  who were ranked 25th in the nation earlier this year.

  • A leadoff hit by pitch followed by a stolen base put early pressure on the Hawks as the Cardinals put a runner in scoring position with no outs.

  • Anna Klein (Souderton, PA) struck out the next hitter, freezing them with an outside pitch before retiring the following batter with a groundout.

  • Klein merely escaped danger but a single in the gap would bring home the run, a great throw by Nadia Pascucci (Troy, NY) from center field was able to cut down the runner trying to stretch for a double.

  • St. John Fisher put a Cardinal in scoring position with a leadoff double and were able to score their second run on a groundout, efficiently scoring two runs on two hits after two innings.

  • Strong starting pitching from Fisher made it hard on the Hawks to gain any momentum before they struck for four runs on five hits, pushing their lead to six.

  • Emily Holladay (Hancocks Bridge, N.J.) recorded the first base hit in the bottom of the third, lining one to opposite field for a single.

  • The Cardinals pushed across two more runs on two hits in the top of the fourth, putting the game out of reach in the first game.

  • Sierra Phillips (Salem, NY) picked up a base hit in the bottom half of the fifth but the team was eventually retired.

GAME TWO

  • The Cardinals opened the second game with four runs in the first inning, building off the leadoff walk with four hits.

  • Brianna Blake (Mechanicville, NY) recorded a walk for the lone base runner in the bottom half of the first.

  • St. John Fisher added on four more runs in the second inning, pushing their lead to eight.

  • The Hawks would go down swinging as Ashlee Stevens (Knox, NY) and Jessica Betts (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) ripped singles to left center but that was all the offense the team could muster, falling to the back to back conference champion Cardinals.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will continue their Empire 8 conference slate on the road, heading to Alfred University for a Friday series with the Saxons, on April 11th at 3 & 5 PM.
