Men's Cross Country Opens Season at Rodenbeck Invitational

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The Hawks kicked off their season away at the Rodenbeck Invitational hosted by St. John Fisher University.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks geared up for their first race of the season, a challenging 6k short course in Pittsford, N.Y.

Junior Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.) was the first Hawk to cross the finish line for the men, living up to the Empire 8 Player to Watch title given to him for this season. He would finish with a time of twenty-three minutes and sixteen seconds.

Finishing only 5 runners behind Higgins, with a time of twenty-three minutes and forty-five seconds, was Larry McCumiskey (Delhi, N.Y.). He was also named as an Empire 8 Player to Watch earlier this week.

As a rookie, first year Basil Metz would stand out with a time of twenty-four minutes and one second, with he and Higgins would combine to overtake four of their competitors in the final two kilometers.

The men's cross country team would finish ninth in team scoring, just above conference rival Keuka College.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH NATE CREWS

"Many of the returners seem to be starting this year just ahead of where they left off last year, with some new faces filling in between them. Today's short course was an effort directed to show the men how to race in head-to-head situations and to learn how to overtake other runners on the course. Junior Erik Higgins and freshman Basil Metz led the way today in this endeavor, overtaking four runners in the last two kilometers."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will take the short trip over to SUNY Oneonta where they will compete in the Oneonta Airfield Invitational at 5PM on Friday, September 5th.
