HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks hit the road for their second away match of the season, squaring off against Ithaca College in the Bombers' season debut after opening their own slate at the Union and William Smith Invitationals.
Doubles play opened with the Bombers striking first, securing the No.3 flight before the Empire 8 Doubles Team of the Week — Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) and Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.) — suffered their first loss of the year, 6-2, at No.2. With the point already clinched, Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N.Dak.) and Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) put up a strong fight at No.1 but were edged 6-3.
Singles action began with Ithaca extending its lead, taking the first match off the board to go up 2-0. Lantzy battled at No.1 but fell 6-2, 6-0, while Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) dropped her first singles contest of the season, 2-6, 1-6, at No.4 to push the Bombers' advantage to 4-0. Vanuga fought tooth-and-nail in a two-set grinder at No.3, narrowly falling 6-7, 4-6 to clinch the overall match for Ithaca.
Leggieri staged a thrilling three-set battle at No.5, taking the opening frame 6-4 before dropping a 5-7 second set and narrowly falling 10-7 in the breaker. Olson capped the day for Hartwick on a high note, earning a gritty three-set win at No.2. After splitting sets 6-4, 3-6, she kept her composure in the tiebreaker to prevail 10-6 and secure Hartwick's lone point, avoiding the sweep.
Despite the setback, the Hawks showcased resilience against a perennial Liberty League power, with Olson's victory highlighting the team's fight heading into the rest of their fall schedule.
