HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hartwick Women's Tennis team continued its hot conference run of form on Saturday, snapping Alfred University's five-match winning streak with a commanding 7–0 sweep. The victory marked the Saxons' first conference loss of the season while the Hawks extended their own Empire 8 streak to three straight.

Doubles play set the tone for the afternoon, as Hartwick's pairs came out sharp against a team that had not dropped a point in three matches. At No.2, the reigning Empire 8 Doubles Team of the Week, Lily Vanuga (Springville, N.Y.) and Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.), rolled to a 6–1 win for their conference-leading sixth doubles victory of the season. Top-flight tandem Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N.Dak.) and Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) followed with a 6–3 triumph at No.1 before Maddi Morrison (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Maggie Van Valkenburgh (Highland, N.Y.) closed out the sweep with a 6–2 decision at No.3.

The Hawks only built from there in singles. Vanuga dominated at No.3 with a 6–0, 6–1 win, while Leggieri blanked her opponent at No.5 in straight sets. At No.1, Samantha Lantzy delivered one of the day's biggest results, defeating the Empire 8's reigning Player of the Week in decisive fashion, 6–1, 6–0. Van Valkenburgh sealed the match with a clinical 6–1, 6–1 victory at No.4.

With the match already in hand, Olson and Morrison put the finishing touches on the sweep. Olson handled business at No.2, while Morrison capped the day at No.6, storming through a 6–0 opening set before grinding out a 7–5 second set to secure the shutout.

The win lifts Hartwick to 3–0 in conference play, underscoring the team's momentum as the Empire 8 slate continues.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will hit the road, squaring off against conference opponent Utica University on Friday, September 26 at 4PM.
