HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick Field Hockey team put together one of its most complete performances of the season, earning a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against Union College on Wednesday afternoon at SUNY Oneonta. The win marks the Hawks' first set of back-to-back victories this fall, while also avenging a shootout loss to the Garnet Chargers in their prior meeting.
Due to facility issues, the Hawks shifted their "home" contest across town to the campus of SUNY Oneonta. Hartwick came out strong in the opening minutes, as Dani Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) tested the Union goalkeeper early. Union generated the first of its three penalty corners in the first quarter, but the Hawks' defense quickly snuffed out the opportunity. Hartwick earned a pair of corners of its own in the ninth and 13th minutes, but could not find the cage. The Chargers had the final look of the quarter but sent their shot high, keeping the match scoreless after 15 minutes.
Union found its rhythm in the second quarter, turning up the pressure with 10 shots in the frame. Hartwick goalkeeper Ava Reynolds and her defensive unit delivered a masterclass in resilience, with Reynolds tallying eight saves in the period to send the game into halftime 0-0. The Hawks became the first unranked team this season to hold Union off the scoreboard through the first two quarters, stalling the nation's No. 5 scoring offense.
The Garnet Chargers finally broke through just four minutes into the second half, slotting in the first goal of the contest. Hartwick struggled to create chances, registering only one shot in the third quarter, and entered the final frame trailing 1-0.
The Hawks wasted little time turning the tide in the fourth. After Reynolds denied two quick Union attempts, Hartwick pushed the ball forward and earned a penalty stroke following a Katelyn Klotz breakaway. Klotz buried the stroke with confidence to even the score at 1-1 with 12 minutes remaining. The Hawks' defense locked down from there, holding Union without a shot for the rest of regulation. Hand nearly delivered the winner in the final minute but was denied, sending the Hawks into overtime for the first time this season.
Union entered the extra frame with overtime experience against nationally ranked foes Wesleyan (#10) and MIT (#23), but Hartwick was the side that struck first. Just minutes into the 7v7 period, Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) earned a corner after slicing through the defense. On the ensuing play, Angioletti and Klotz worked a perfectly executed give-and-go, as Angioletti slipped a quick return pass to Klotz, who tipped in the golden goal to secure the 2-1 victory.
Reynolds finished the day with 14 saves, her defensive unit blanking Union for three of four quarters. Klotz tallied both goals in the comeback win, while Angioletti picked up the decisive assist.
