Field Hockey Suffers Setback at No.25 Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Hawks went head to head with Geneseo on Saturday afternoon, dropping their first conference game of the season to the defending Empire 8 champions at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick Field Hockey team squared off against nationally ranked Geneseo on Saturday in a rematch of the 2024 Empire 8 Championship, with the Hawks ultimately falling 2-0 in conference play.

The Knights came out aggressive from the opening whistle, generating multiple corners and testing the Hartwick defense early. Goalkeeper Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) stood strong, turning away six first-quarter shots while the Hawks successfully defended six corners to keep the game scoreless after the opening frame.

Geneseo broke through in the second quarter, converting a penalty stroke four minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. Despite being under constant pressure, Hartwick's defense continued to work tirelessly, limiting the Knights to their lowest shooting output in the third quarter. Natalie O'Malley (Pleasantville, N.Y.) registered the Hawks' first shot of the game late in the frame, but it was blocked as Geneseo maintained their one-goal advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Knights added a second goal early in the fourth, but Hartwick showed fight down the stretch. The Hawks created their best offensive push of the contest, earning five penalty corners in the final period. However, they were unable to break through, falling short against a tough Geneseo squad.

 

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will prepare to defend home turf against the Elmira Soaring Eagles on Wednesday, October 1st at 4PM.
