HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite some rain earlier in the day, the game proceeded without delay to kick off men's soccer Mayor's Cup competition. Both teams came out of the gate hot, showing off speed and some aggressive playing styles. It was clear both the Hawks and the Beacons wanted to get on the board first, but it would be UMass Boston who claimed the first goal of the match nearly 26 minutes into the match. After the Hawks struggled to keep possession after a corner kick, a Beacons fast break would lead to them finding the back of the net.
The Hawks were hungry to tie the game, though the Beacons' persistent offense would keep them on their toes. Finally, a late corner kick with only ten seconds to go in the first half was the catalyst to a stellar goal by Hunter Bulich (Catskill, N.Y.), who was assisted by Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tex.).
Intensity rose in the second half, though a miscommunication on the 'Wick defense would unfortunately cause a self-goal, unintentionally bringing the Beacons to a one-goal lead once more. Then with 8 minutes left in the game, UMass Boston would seal their lead with yet another goal, making the final score 3-1 in favor of the Beacons.
