HOW IT HAPPENED
Hartwick, hoping to secure a third place ranking in the Mayor's Cup Tournament, faced off against the Monarchs of King's College on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Both teams had come off of a loss from the day before, and were hungry to make their impact on the field today. The Hawks would strike first, with sophomore Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tex.) snagging his first collegiate goal after having missed out on his freshman season due to injuries. The Monarchs would answer back less than four minutes later, however, with a goal of their own from a player fresh off the bench on the substitution to knot the score.
Multiple consecutive corner kicks for the Hawks gave them ample scoring opportunity, but the Monarchs intended to stay alive in this tournament, with their defense giving the Hawks nothing. With less than five seconds of the clock in the first half, Timmy McQueeney (Wading River, N.Y.) would take a shot to try and bring the Hawks to a lead going into the second half, though the Monarchs goalkeeper would snag it from the top left and tally a save.
Intense fast breaks and aggressive plays only continued going into the second half as intensity on both sides of the field built. 'Wick was plagued with a series of yellow cards throughout the second that jeopardized their victory. However, first-year Wilson Mount (Atlanta, Ga.) would also net a goal off a beautiful rebound and pass from senior Alex Norgeot (Cohasset, Mass.).Â
Consecutive fouls from the Hawks would set King's College up to score again ten minutes later and keep the game tied, though not for long; Junior forward Nick Nowak (Shoreham, N.Y.) would sneak one past the goalkeeper for his own first collegiate goal only less than two minutes after the Monarchs scored.
Though the Hawks battled hard, a goal by the Monarchs with less than two minutes remaining in the game would be enough to deadlock the teams at 3-3. Both the Monarchs and the Hawks had lost the day prior in the tournament, but a more substantial goal differential in the 'Wick loss would lead to King's College edging out the Hawks for third. Despite the tied game to end the tournament, both Hunter Bulich (Catskill, N.Y.) and Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tex.) would receive the honor of being named to the 2025 Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team for their outstanding performances this weekend.
