HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick Hawks wrapped up the opening week of their six-game homestand with an Empire 8 conference clash against the Houghton Highlanders, marking the first of two meetings between the squads this season.

Hartwick endured a slow start, falling behind by 13 early before Sophia DiCalogero (Melrose, Mass.) halted the run with a strong finish inside. Houghton maintained its momentum, posting 26 points in the opening quarter. Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) and Olivia Farnham (Millerton, N.Y.) helped keep the Hawks going by converting at the free-throw line as Hartwick headed into the second frame trailing.

Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) opened the second quarter with a bucket before finding Trinity Thornton (Sherburne, N.Y.) for a three-pointer. Durkin and Cohen continued to attack the paint, but the Highlanders stayed hot offensively, shooting 52 percent in the quarter to extend their advantage. Niamh Kelly (Latham, N.Y.) added to the interior scoring, while Durkin closed the half with a steal and score to provide a late spark.

The second half remained in Houghton's control as the Highlanders caught fire from beyond the arc. Senior captain Emma Cohen led the Hawks through the stretch with timely baskets, while DiCalogero and Natalie Vredenburgh (Delhi, N.Y.) added points at the free-throw line heading into the fourth quarter. Cohen opened the final frame with back-to-back triples to jumpstart the offense, Meghan Paul (Waterford, N.Y.) was perfect at the charity stripe, and Caleigh Richards (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) provided late scoring, but Hartwick ultimately fell at home to the Highlanders.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will host the St. John Fisher Cardinals on Friday, January 23rd to continue their Empire 8 slate at Lambros Arena.
