HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Hartwick Track and Field teams headed back to Houghton for the Highlander Invitational, steadily making progress towards conference and regional qualifying marks on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a strong showing to open the 2025-2026 campaign at the Houghton December Classic, the Hawks returned to Houghton primed for another solid effort.
The 60-meter preliminaries kicked things off as Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.) and Isaiah Sanon (Suffern, N.Y.) advanced to the finals, posting times of 7.09 and 7.19 seconds, respectively. In the final, Bazemore finished fourth with a 7.04, while Sanon posted a collegiate-best 7.14 to claim sixth.
Sanon continued his standout day by hitting an Empire 8 qualifying mark in the 200-meter event with a time of 23.56 seconds. Bazemore placed third in the same event with a 22.75 finish; his season-best 22.40, recorded earlier at Houghton, remains the fastest in the Empire 8 this year.
The Hawks also posted their best 4x400 relay time of the season as Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.), Calvin Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.), Will Mensah (Cliffwood, N.J.), and Basil Metz (Highland, N.Y.) combined for a 3:42.59 finish.
In field events, Ayden Burger (Copake, N.Y.) recorded a personal best in the weight throw, landing a mark of 41 feet, 11¼ inches to place sixth. Joseph Fay (Walton, N.Y.) improved his Empire 8 qualifying mark in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 4½ inches. First-year Jayden Beatty (West Babylon, N.Y.) claimed sixth in the shot put, posting 41 feet, 0.5 inches, steadily improving in his debut season. Marquis Jones-McKinney (Astoria, N.Y.) rounded out the Hawks' strong showing with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8¾ inches).
