HOW IT HAPPENED
Hartwick women's basketball hit the road to face off the Geneseo Knights, falling behind in a 35-68 loss on the night.
Geneseo forced two early turnovers to open the first quarter, but
Olivia Farnham (Millerton, N.Y.) put Hartwick on the board first, drawing a foul and sinking both free throws. The momentum stayed with the Hawks,
Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) adding a mid-range jumper, and
Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) knocking down a three-pointer to give Hartwick a 7-4 edge. A Hawks foul sent Geneseo to the line, resulting in a fast break jumper to take the lead. The quarter closed with Geneseo narrowly ahead with a score of 10-9.
Geneseo created separation in the second quarter, widening the gap with a scoring run. Following a Hartwick timeout,
Leah Schoonover (Fredericksburg, Va.) connected from behind the arc to pull the Hawks closer. The Knights responded immediately with two free throws and a jumper, pushing the advantage back up. Geneseo outscored Hartwick by 16, taking control of the momentum heading into halftime.
Coming into the third, Hartwick showed improvement on their court spacing and ball movement. Schoonover assisted the Hawks' first 5 points of the quarter. Durkin opened with a long-jumper, and
Jessica Bowens (Malta, N.Y.) followed with an and-one layup.
Macy Durkin also managed to notch 5 rebounds on the night, hitting the 500-rebound mark for her career.
Despite the push, Geneseo maintained their pace, finishing with 16 cumulative fast-break points, extending their lead down the stretch to secure the game.
