HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks faced one of the Empire 8's top offenses in Brockport, who entered the matchup riding a six-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles opened the contest with a 13-4 run. Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) provided Hartwick's first field goal, while Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) and Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added points at the free-throw line. Natalie Vredenburgh (Delhi, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer off a feed from Durkin, then forced a turnover and grabbed an offensive rebound to help set up Leah Schoonover (Fredericksburg, Va.) for a triple as the Hawks worked to trim the deficit.
Hartwick opened the second quarter with renewed energy as Smith converted on a second-chance opportunity and Olivia Farnham (Millerton, N.Y.) added an interior basket to pull the Hawks within three. Brockport responded with a scoring run to stretch the lead back to double digits, but Durkin answered with a three-pointer and a paint score to momentarily slow the surge. Kylie Guarino (Auburn, N.Y.) closed out the half with a perfect trip to the free-throw line and an inside finish, sending the Hawks into halftime trailing by 10.
Brockport maintained control coming out of the break, but Hartwick continued to battle. Jessica Bowens (Malta, N.Y.) opened the second-half scoring with a basket in the paint, while Niamh Kelly (Latham, N.Y.) provided a spark offensively, attacking the lane and scoring eight straight points to close the third quarter.
The Hawks struggled to find their rhythm in the final frame as Brockport delivered its strongest offensive stretch of the afternoon to pull away and secure the win.
Durkin led Hartwick on the glass with 10 rebounds while adding nine points. Kelly finished with eight points, and Smith recorded a strong all-around effort with eight rebounds and five points.
