Women's Tennis Wraps Up Regular Season with Empire 8 Sweep at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hartwick College women's tennis team closed out its regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon, earning a 7-0 victory over Alfred University in an Empire 8 matchup at the Alfred University Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-5 overall and 6-2 in Empire 8 play as they await the result of St. John Fisher versus Houghton to determine their postseason seeding. If St. John Fisher wins, Hartwick will earn the No. 3 seed and host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 13. If St. John Fisher falls to Houghton, the Hawks will be the No. 2 seed and receive a bye to the semifinals and travel to Geneseo on Friday, Oct. 16 for their first postseason match.

In doubles, Hartwick secured two of the three matches to take an early advantage. The No. 2 pairing of seniors Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Autumn Millington (Rome, N.Y./Westmoreland) battled to a 7-6 victory, winning the tiebreaker 7-4. At No. 3 doubles, Elise Beauharnois (Peru, N.Y./Peru) and Sasha Garcia (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South) earned a convincing 6-2 victory. Alfred claimed the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 6-4.

In singles play, the Hawks swept all six matches to secure the conference victory. Senior Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) led the way at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Tehani Courte (Noumea, South Province/UCO) followed at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Leggieri cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

Beauharnois battled back after dropping the opening set at No. 4 singles, earning a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) victory in a third-set tiebreaker. Millington added a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5, while Garcia rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6.

The Hawks now await the conclusion of the St. John Fisher-Houghton matchup to learn their postseason fate as they prepare for the Empire 8 Championship.
