ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick College football team fell to Alfred University, 27-7, Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium in an Empire 8 Conference matchup. The Hawks scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, while the Saxons used three rushing touchdowns from junior Tommy Nyquist to build a 27-0 lead before Hartwick answered late.

Nicholas Massaregli (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) provided Hartwick's lone touchdown of the afternoon, rushing four times for 37 yards and a 14-yard score. He also led the Hawks through the air with 11 receptions for 43 yards. Senior
Akil Williams (Chester, N.Y./Chester) paced the rushing attack with 41 yards on 11 carries, while junior
Braden Moreau (Ilion, N.Y./Central Valley Academy) added 34 yards on nine carries.
Moreau completed 8-of-13 passes for 66 yards, while freshman Ty'Lyn Blackwell-Williams (Nyack, N.Y./Tappan Zee) went 11-for-18 for 39 yards. Senior
Miles Perry (Ilion, N.Y./Central Valley Academy) hauled in three passes for 22 yards, while junior
Latrell Willis (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) added three receptions for 19 yards.

Joseph Algieri (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) led the Hawks with 12 total tackles and junior
Colby Phraner (Walton, N.Y./Walton) added 10. Phraner had two tackels for loss while junior
Nathan Hartman (Winfield, N.Y./Winfield) recorded eight total tackles and had 1.5 tackles for loss.
Alfred finished with 276 yards of total offense compared to 213 for Hartwick. The Saxons held a 239-108 advantage in rushing yards, while Hartwick totaled 105 passing yards. Alfred also held an 18-12 edge in first downs.
Penalties were another significant statistical difference, with Hartwick being flagged 10 times for 84 yards compared to four penalties for 30 yards by Alfred.
Hartwick falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in Empire 8 play, while Alfred improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Rochester to take on St. John Fisher University in a 2 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
Alfred broke through at the start of the second quarter following a 16-play, 94-yard drive that consumed 8:28, mostly in the first quarter. Nyquist capped the possession with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Saxons a 7-0 lead.
Later in the second quarter, Alfred put together a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Nyquist scoring on a 25-yard rushing touchdown with 2:23 remaining in the half. The score gave the Saxons a 13-0 advantage at halftime.
After an interception early in the third quarter, Alfred turned the takeaway into points, going 31 yards on six plays before Nyquist scored from one yard out. The touchdown made it 20-0 with 8:54 remaining in the third.
Alfred added its final score early in the fourth quarter, going 21 yards in six plays before Caleb Eastman connected with Dan Mucica on a seven-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-0.
Hartwick responded on its next possession, driving 73 yards in 10 plays over 3:12. Massaregli finished the drive with his 14-yard touchdown run, and freshman
Landon Smith (La Plata, Md./North Point) converted the extra point to put the Hawks on the board with 3:18 remaining.
