ITHACA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Track and Field team posted a solid tune-up effort at the Marc Denault Invitational, headlined by Marquis Jones-McKinney taking home the high-jump event behind a new personal best at Cornell University on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With just one week remaining before the Empire 8 Championships, the Hawks fine-tuned their performances at the Marc Deneault Invitational, competing against talent from all three NCAA divisions.
The Blue and White delivered a strong showing in the men's 400 meters, as three Hawks secured their spots at the Empire 8 Championships. Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.) led the charge with a time of 53.49, followed closely by Patrick Conteh (Salisbury, Md.) in 53.81. Will Mensah (Cliffwood, N.J.) rounded out the trio with a 54.98 finish.
In the 200 meters, Shane Hunte (Rosedale, N.Y.) continued to sharpen his form, crossing the line in 23.00 seconds, just .13 off his personal best set last week at Utica University, a performance that earned him his championship qualification. Isaiah Sanon (Montbello, N.Y.) and Jaiden Deacon (Valley Stream, N.Y.), both already qualified, returned to the event and turned in strong efforts of 23.59 and 23.84, respectively.
On the field side, Marquis Jones-McKinney (Astoria, N.Y.) stole the spotlight in the high jump, breaking his personal record once again to claim first place. Jones-McKinney cleared 1.96 meters (6 feet, 5 inches), further solidifying his position among the top three high jumpers in the conference heading into championship weekend.
