ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Hartwick Track & Field team opened Day One of the Empire 8 Championship on Friday at Nazareth University, highlighted by a record-breaking performance from Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks started strong as Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.) shattered the program record in the 60-meter dash with a blazing time of 6.89 seconds. He finished just 0.01 seconds behind Brockport for the top qualifying spot, securing his place in Saturday's finals. First-year Isaiah Sanon (Montebello, N.Y.) impressed in his championship debut, clocking 7.14 seconds and narrowly missing the finals by 0.03 seconds.
Bazemore also delivered in the long jump, recording a mark of 6.78 meters (22 feet, 3 inches) to place fourth and score the first team points of the meet for the Blue and White.
On the women's side, Brynita Haas (Red Creek, N.Y.) competed in the 5,000 meters, finishing eight with a time of 19:00.43 to secure a podium finish.
The Distance Medley Relay capped the evening for both squads. The men's team of Avery Lungstrom (Bel Air, Md.), Will Mensah (Cliffwood, N.J.), Basil Metz (Highland, N.Y.), and Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.) crossed the line in 11:16.08 to earn a team point.
The women's quartet of Emilia Murphy (Amsterdam, N.Y.), Keziah Anderson (Rock Island, Ill.), Amelia Steitz (Fairport, N.Y.), and Julia Weinschreider (Williamson, N.Y.) followed with a time of 14:54.71, also picking up a point to close out Day One.
