HOW IT HAPPENED
Hartwick battled Utica in a tight, back-and-forth contest, with the momentum shifting late in a 4-3 decision.
Utica threatened early putting a runner on base in the first, but Hartwick worked out of trouble to keep things scoreless with a double play. A pop-up to second base ended the top of the first, giving the Hawks the at bat.
The Hawks capitalized in the bottom half, as
Madi Hoerman (Portage, MI) worked a leadoff walk, advancing off of a sacrifice bunt from
Ashlee Stevens (Knox, NY).
Alicea Seitzinger (Bridgeton, NJ) drew another walk, before
Samantha Moore (Mamaroneck, NY) came through with a clutch RBI single to give Wick a 1-0 lead.
Utica answered in the second inning with a solo home run, evening the score. Hartwick limited damage on another Pioneers hit heading into the third inning. Utica was able to capitalize off of a Hartwick error, bringing a player around the bases to give them their first lead of the day. The Hawks responded again in the bottom of the third, as Seitzinger reached and Moore collected her second hit of the game to spark the inning.
Nadia Pascucci (Troy, NY) drove in the tying run with a single, part of a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate.
After a quiet stretch through the middle innings, Hartwick regained the lead in the sixth. Pascucci singled to start the inning, and after a walk put two on,
Mihaly Blake (Troy, NY) delivered an RBI double to right field to give the Hawks a 3-2 edge.
Utica pushed in the seventh, stringing together an RBI double and an RBI single to take control. Hartwick went scoreless in the final frame, losing the game out in a 4-3 final.
The second game of the double-header got postponed due to inclement weather, with a new date to be announced.
