Hawks Explode With 15 Runs to Win Conference Contest

ONEONTA, NY – The Hawks caught a victory Saturday afternoon, splitting their home conference contests against Houghton.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)

Houghton struck first in the opening inning, stringing together three hits and capitalizing on an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. From there, Hartwick's defense settled in nicely holding nine Highlanders hitless down the stretch.

An RBI single added an insurance run to Houghton's score, extending their lead 2-0. Hartwick final broke through in the sixth inning. Casey O'Connor (Albany, NY) sparked the rally with a single, and Nadia Pascucci (Troy, NY) followed with a clutch RBI double to cut the deficit to 2-1. Shannon Mentz (Binghamton, NY) kept the inning alive with another base hit, but the Hawks couldn't bring the tying run home.

In the seventh, Madi Hoerman (Portage, MI) led off with a single and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, putting the tying run just within reach. However, a pop-up to second base ended the threat and sealed the narrow loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)

Hartwick came out swinging early and held off a late push from Houghton to secure a 15-7 win.
The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board, as Madi Hoerman led off the first with a double, later scoring on a Sierra Phillips (Salem, NY) RBI single. Hartwick added another run in the inning, capitalizing on a double from Alicea Seitzinger (Bridgeton, NJ) and a wild pitch to build a 4-0 lead.

The game broke wide open in the third. Hartwick sent multiple hitters to the plate, scoring six runs on key hits from Seitzinger and Phillips, along with producing 5 walks. By the end of the inning, the Hawks had surged ahead 10-0.

Houghton responded in the fourth with a four-run inning, stringing together hits to cut into the deficit. The Highlanders added three more in the fifth, including a two-run homer to make it a 10-7 game. The Hawks answered in the sixth with Mihaly Blake (Troy, NY) jump starting the offense with a solo home run- her second of the weekend. Ashlee Stevens (Knox, NY), O'Connor, and Phillips hit key RBIs to help the Hawks pull away, extending their lead 15-7.
