HOW IT HAPPENED
In their continuation of a previously postponed game, Hartwick resumed play in the bottom of the third inning with a 3-2 lead with one out. Autumn Millington (Westmoreland, NY) worked a walk and moved to second on a bunt by Sierra Phillips (Salem, NY) A wild pitch pushed Millington to third, but a fly out ended the threat, leaving her stranded and sending the game into the later innings.

Both sides settled in defensively over the next two innings, with Hartwick picking up a hit in each frame, but unable to manufacture an insurance run. Utica threatened in spots as well but were held in check, keeping the score at 3-2 heading into the sixth.

In the top of the sixth inning, Utica capitalized on a leadoff walk and a Hartwick error to flip the game. A two-run triple gave the Pioneers their first lead of the afternoon, and a follow-up RBI single extended the advantage to 5-3.

Hartwick answered in the bottom half, where an RBI single from Emily Holladay (Hancocks Bridge, NJ) cur the deficit to one, and a bases-loaded walk brought in the tying run to make it 5-5. The Hawks threatened for more but left the bases loaded, unable to produce the go-ahead RBI.

Utica delivered the decisive blow in the seventh, using a solo home run to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Hartwick mounted one last push in the bottom of the inning by moving a runner to third but were ultimately unable to bring her home as the Pioneers held on for the narrow win.
