Late Rally Falls Short for Hartwick at Union

Schenectady, NY – Hartwick met Union for some non-conference play on Wednesday, dropping both games.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
Hartwick battled in their first game, ultimately unable to find their rhythm down the stretch. The Hawks finished with one hit and four baserunners across five innings. Shannon Mentz (Binghamton, NY) accounted for the Blue and White's only hit of the game, while also reaching base once and advancing into scoring position in the fourth inning.

Despite limited offensive opportunities, the Hawks applied pressure on the bases with Madi Hoerman (Portage, MI) swiping second base to put herself into scoring position in the third inning. Two Wick errors led to four unearned Union runs. Union produced a four-run fourth inning to widen the gap 8-0, with the Hawks unable to convert.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
Hartwick showed up with more energy in the second game, totaling three runs on three hits. The Hawks first got on the board in the second with a walk from Autumn Millington (Westmoreland, NY) who advanced to third on a wild pitch. She eventually scored on a Union error, giving the Hawks a 1-0 edge.

Shelby Swartz (Candor, NY) highlighted the early offense with a double, accounting for Hartwick's only extra-base hit through the first five innings. Despite limited hitting opportunities, the Hawks consistently created chances for themselves by reaching base in five innings.

Union capitalized with six runs on twelve hits, a two-RBI single giving them the lead. Two Hartwick errors led to four unearned runs, extending the lead 1-6. The Hawks were able to mount their strongest push in the sixth inning, stringing together two hits and a walk. Alicea Seitzinger (Bridgeton, NJ) reached first and stole second before Shannon Mentz and Sierra Phillips (Salem, NY) drove in back-to-back singles, with Phillips driving in two runs to cut the deficit 6-3.
