ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick Field Hockey built an early three-goal advantage and held on late for a 3-2 victory over Oneonta in their Battle of the Hills matchup.
The Hawks wasted little time getting on the board,
Lexi Cheeseman (Owego, N.Y.) finding the back of the cage just a minute and a half into the contest.
Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) assisted on the opening goal, giving Hartwick an early 1-0 lead.
Hartwick continued to pressure Oneonta throughout the opening period, recording eight shots and earning four penalty corners.
Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) kept the Hawks in front defensively, making two saves in the first quarter, including a stop on an Oneonta penalty stroke.
Hartwick doubled its advantage in the second quarter when
Kylie Krawiec (Burlington, N.J.) scored at the 27:20 mark. The Hawks carried a 2-0 lead into halftime after limiting Oneonta to just one shot in the second period.
The Hawks extended their lead in the third quarter,
Kayla Kinkel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) finding the cage, assisted by
Mary McCarvill (Pleasantville, NY) to put Wick ahead 3-0. Oneonta answered later in the quarter, cutting the deficit to two. They added another goal early in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game with just over eleven minutes remaining.
Hartwick's defense held firm down the stretch. Reynolds made two more saves in the fourth quarter, while
Kendal Woolley (Blue Point, N.Y.) added a defensive save to help preserve the Hawks' one-goal advantage.
Hartwick finished the match with a 24-13 edge in shots and held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Angioletti led the Hawks with nine shots and an assist, while Krawiec recorded three shots and a goal. Kinkel finished with a goal and an assist, with Cheeseman scoring the opening goal. Defensively, Reynolds held the Hawks down with four saves in the victory.
