ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men's soccer faced Oneonta in their Battle of the Hills match up, a late goal setting them behind 1-0 to the Red Dragons in the narrow loss.
The Hawks and Red Dragons played to a scoreless draw through the opening 45 minutes, with Hartwick goalkeeper
Jelani Usim (Kingston, Jamaica) making one save in the first half. Hartwick generated their best chance after half, putting nine of their ten total shots on goal, earning six corner kicks.
Nils Ole Petersen (Greiz, Germany) took over in goal following halftime, keeping the Hawks within striking distance throughout the last 45 minutes. He made three saves as Hartwick continued to apply pressure offensively, with
Fischer Brogan (Ocean View, N.J.) forcing a save in the first thirteen seconds of the second half, striking again in the 62
nd minute just barely hitting the right post.
The Hawks continued to pressure the Red Dragons,
Kayden Zachgo (Warwick, N.Y.) hitting the top crossbar in the 65
th minute, while
Wilson Mount (Atlanta, Ga.) and
Devin Chandler (Wylie, Tx.) also recorded second-half chances. Petersen came up with back-to-back saves in the 77
th minute, halting Oneonta's offensive attempts in the box.
Oneonta broke through in the 79
th minute, finding the back of the net off of an assist. Hartwick responded by pushing forward in the final 12 minutes, earning four corner kicks after Oneonta's goal, including back-to-back opportunities in the final two minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
