ONEONTA, N.Y. – Women's soccer picked up their first win of the season in an Empire 8 match up against the Nazareth Golden Flyers, clutching a 1-0 shutout victory.
The Hawks controlled the opening stages of the match, with
Ella Grupe (Freehold, N.Y.) nearly putting Hartwick on the board in the eighth minute when her shot hit the top of the crossbar. Hartwick continued to create offensive opportunities, with
Marisol Gadziala (New Hartford, N.Y.) forcing a save from Nazareth's keeper in the 17
th minute.
The Golden Flyers applied pressure throughout the opening half, but Hartwick goalkeeper
Kelsey Bollen (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) kept the match scoreless with three saves in the opening frame.
Nazareth continued to pressure the Hawks following half-time, but Bollen remained steady in net. The freshman goalkeeper denied six more Nazareth shots in the second half, finishing the afternoon with nine saves and a shutout.
Hartwick broke through in the 77
th minute when Gadziala found the back of the net. The goal gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage, standing as the game-winning goal. Hartwick's defense held Nazareth without a goal over the final 13 minutes to secure the shutout. The Golden Flyers finished with 15 shots, including nine on goal. The Hawks finished with four shots, Grupe and Gadziala recording two each. Gadziala put both of her attempts on frame, scoring to secure the shutout victory for the Hawks.
