Hawks Come Up Short in Battle of the Hills

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Hartwick volleyball team battled Oneonta in their Battle of the Hills matchup, falling in three-straight sets of 25-20.

Hartwick was led offensively by Makella O'Neill (Webster, N.Y.), who finished with a team-high 10 kills, adding nine digs. Lucille Walker (Ithaca, N.Y.) recorded seven kills and a pair of blocks, while Samantha Garback (Tully, N.Y.) added five kills while hitting a .308. Thylia Keoviengsamay (Rome, N.Y.)  helped direct the offense with 27 assists, contributing defensively with nine digs.

Malia Dake (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) paced the Hawks defensively with 12 digs, while Nicole Decker (Coeymans Hollow, N.Y.) picked up six digs.

As a team, Hartwick finished with 33 kills and 48 digs, while adding three service aces and five total blocks. The Hawks hit .165 for the match and held Oneonta to 10 attack errors. The Red Dragons finished with 46 kills and a .283 hitting percentage.

With the result, Hartwick moves to 5-7 on the season, and will look to bounce back in their next match against the Russell Sage Gators.

Hartwick opened the first set by trading points with Oneonta early, tying at 6-6 before the Red Dragons created separation. Oneonta built a 15-9 advantage, but the Hawks continued to battle and later pulled within three points at 20-17. Hartwick stayed within striking distance late, but Oneonta closed the set 25-20.

The second set remained close through the early stages, with Hartwick taking an 8-7 lead before the Red Dragons answered. Oneonta moved ahead 15-12, but the Hawks continued to fight, tying the set 16-16. The Red Dragons regained control late and finished off the second set 25-20.

Hartwick again battled through the third, pulling even with Oneonta at 13-13 after trailing early. The teams remained within a few points of one another, with Hartwick tying the score again at 18-18. Oneonta responded with a late run, taking the third set 25-20 to complete the sweep.
