Waleed Farid enters his fifth season at the helm of Hartwick's men's basketball program in 2020-21. He is the 19th head coach in the 90-year history of the program.
This past season, Farid piloted the Hawks to a 14-11 overall record and a fifth-place finish in the Empire 8 Conference standings. Farid guided a trio of players - Pat Garey, Kyle Bradshaw, Austin Haskell - to Empire 8 All-Conference recognition.
In his second season with the program, Farid guided freshman Kevin Townes to D3hoops.com East Region and Empire 8 Rookie of the Year honors. It marked the third time since 2011 a Hartwick player has garnered top rookie honors in the region and the sixth time within the E8.
In his first season with the Hawks, Farid helped the team to a final record of 16-9. He earned his first coaching win in his debut on November 15, which was a 101-85 victory over Union. Farid guided guards Joey Lufkin and Brandon LaForest to Empire 8 Second Team honors.
Prior to Hartwick, Farid spent seven years serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Stevens Institute of Technology. In that time frame, Farid helped the Ducks to a record of 127-67 and three 20-win seasons.
Farid was involved in all aspects of the program at Stevens including practice planning, game preparation, implementing in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs, opponent scouting, team and individual player development, and recruiting. He helped the Ducks to Empire 8 Tournament appearances in six of his seven seasons and two conference regular season titles. Stevens won the ECAC Metro Championship in 2011 and received an at-large berth into the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
As a student-athlete at Stevens, Farid guided the Ducks to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and the program’s first-ever ECAC Metro title in 2008. He graduated as the program’s career leader in points, rebounds and steals, and still sits top-10 in several career categories. Farid was a three-time all-conference selection, a preseason All-American for the 2007-08 season, and he earned NABC All-Atlantic District and All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association honors in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Farid graduated from Stevens in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Technology.
After graduation, Farid went overseas to play for Alexandria Sporting Club in Egypt. He averaged 10 points in just 15 minutes per game.
Farid is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a personal trainer. He is also certified by Precision Nutrition as a Level 1 Nutrition Coach.
