Katie Marcella begins her sixth season as head women’s basketball coach at Hartwick in 2020-2021.
This past season, Marcella led the Hawks to a 14-12 overall record and their second consecutive Empire 8 playoff appearance. It marked the third playoff berth for the Hawks in Marcella's five seasons with the program. She coached a trio of players earning All-Empire 8 honors in Mary Schoenherr (2nd Team), Giuliana Pritchard (2nd Team), and Maggie Kirby (Honorable Mention).
In 2018-19, Marcella led 'Wick to one of the greatest seasons in program history, winning both the outright Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time ever. The Hawks had 23 wins, tying for the second-most in a season in program history and breaking 20 victories for the first time since 2013-14. They also set a new program benchmark for most conference wins in a season, with 14. From January 5 through February 5, Hartwick won 12 straight games before a double-overtime loss, then won their next four games culminating in a win in the Empire 8 Championship over St. John Fisher. This gave the program its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014, resulting in a slim loss to Emmanuel College in the First Round.
Marcella and her staff were named the Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year, and Marcella was named the Division III Women's Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY). She also coached a trio of players to postseason awards: Caitlin Corbett was named to the Empire 8 First Team (as well as the Empire 8 Tournament MVP), to D3hoops.com's All-East Region Second Team, and to the BCANY's Women's Division III All-Upstate Team. Carly Johnson garnered a second-straight Second Team All-Conference selection, and freshman Maggie Kirby received an E8 Honorable Mention.
Marcella guided the Hawks to a record of 17-9 and an impressive 13-3 mark in the Empire 8 Conference in 2016-17. The Hawks would earn a berth in the Empire 8 semifinals for the first time since 2014. Seniors Emily Stone and Jacqui Foreman each were recognized on the Empire 8 Second Team.
In her first season guiding the program, Marcella led the Hawks to a fifth-place finish in the Empire 8 Conference with a 7-9 mark. She coached senior forward Taylor Vonasek to Empire 8 First Team and D3hoops.com All-East Region honors.
Prior to 'Wick, Marcella served as head women’s basketball coach at Division III Monmouth College in Illinois. She also spent three seasons at the helm at Keuka College.
Marcella led Monmouth to a 10-win campaign and a 9-9 Midwest Conference mark in her first season piloting the Fighting Scots in 2014-15. Prior to Monmouth, she was a part of six postseason appearances at Keuka, which included three North Eastern Athletic Conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
She began her collegiate coaching career at Keuka, serving as assistant women’s basketball and head cross country coach from 2008-2012. In that period of time, she helped the program to a pair of NEAC Championships and two trips to the national tournament. She took over the reins of the program on an interim basis in December 2011, and promptly led the Storm to a 19-6 record, their third consecutive NEAC crown, and third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Keuka removed the interim tag from Marcella’s job title, making her the full-time head women’s basketball coach in May 2012. She guided the Storm to the NEAC regular season title and the conference championship game in 2012-2013. In her six seasons associated with the program, she helped Keuka to a record of 110-40.
A 2007 graduate of the College at Brockport, Marcella received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She received a master’s degree from her alma mater in athletic administration in 2011.
As a player at Brockport, Marcella was a four-year letter winner and three-year captain for the Golden Eagles. As a sophomore, she helped the program to the 2004-2005 SUNYAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She was a second team all-conference pick in her junior campaign, and named first team All-SUNYAC and team MVP as a senior.
