Unbeaten Alfred Takes Down ’Wick Football

ALFRED, NY – Undefeated Alfred (5-0) rang up 498 total yards of offense and limited Hartwick (4-2) to 276 in a 42-17 victory on Saturday at Alfred's Merrill Field. The win gives the Saxons a half-game lead for first place in the Empire 8 standings. The Hawks fall to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Alfred, which turned the ball over a season-high five times on the day, was paced by running back Vinson Hendrix, quarterback Tom Secky, and wide receiver Jared Manzer. Hendrix rushed for 203 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries, Secky threw for 266 yards and four scores on 22-of-30 passing, and Manzer made eight receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Hartwick's Brian Radley (Herkimer, NY/Dolgeville) threw for 218 yards with two touchdown passes to Noah Koreman (Albany, NY/Albany). Radley connected on 17 of his 38 passing attempts and was intercepted twice on the day. Koreman made eight catches for a game-high 129 yards.
Alfred scored on its first possession of the game which was set up by a 44-yard connection between Secky and Manzer on the first play from scrimmage. Hendrix finished the drive to give the hosts the lead two plays later after two and a half minutes.
Following a Heath Dunn (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) 42-yard field goal for the Hawks, Ben Zarzycki (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) intercepted Secky in his own end zone to give Hartwick a chance to drive to take the lead in the first quarter. A three-and-out, however, gave the ball back to Alfred and a Secky to Manzer five-yard hookup capped a 6-play 59-yard drive to instead put the Saxons up 14-3.
In the second quarter, Radley was picked off by Alfred's Roland O'Brien, and seven offensive plays and 66 yards later, Alfred extended its lead to 21-3 on a DJ Loughlan-Pope touchdown catch.
The Hawks finally responded marching 79 yards in three minutes. Radley hit Koreman three times for 7, 27, and finally 23 yards for the touchdown to shave the deficit to 11 points midway through the second quarter.
Alfred wasted little time building the advantage back up going 60 yards on six plays with Secky hitting Andrew Hall for his third TD pass of the day-this one a five-yard score. 'Wick turned the ball over on its next possession on a Tosh DeMulder (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) fumble, and the Saxons took advantage just before halftime scoring on a Hendrix 10-yard scamper to go up by 25, 35-10.
In the third quarter, the Saxons turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions. Hartwick failed to convert any of the takeaways into points, however, punting twice and turning the ball over on downs on the other.
Early in the fourth, after a botched snap on an Alfred punt attempt, Hartwick took over at the Saxon 31 yard-line and quickly turned it into six points. DeMulder rushed four eight yards and Radley found Koreman for a 23-yard score to pull the Hawks to within 18 with 12 minutes to play. But following another Radley pick, the Saxons ran off five minutes on a 9-play, 60-yard drive finished off by a Nick Clark two-yard score for the game's final points.
DeMulder ended the game with 63 yards on the ground for the Hawks. Chris Lopez ran for another 54 yards to go along with Hendrix's 203. Ryan Thon made five catches for 68 yards and Milton Harding secured four receptions for 43 yards.
Spirou led all tacklers with 11. Nick Gonzalez (Danbury, CT/Somers) and Matt Brown (Londonderry, NH/Bridgton Academy) each registered 10 with Gonzalez earning a game-high eight solo hits.
The Hawks have a bye week before hosting Springfield on October 24th at Wright Stadium. The game with the Pride is set for 4 p.m.
