Hawks Tie Bowling Green in Wild 2-2 Match

BOWLING GREEN, OH – Hartwick's men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw at Bowling Green on Sunday to gain a valuable road point. The tie also keeps Wick's nine-game unbeaten streak intact. All four of the game's goals were scored in an action-packed final 19 minutes of regulation play. The match was a highly-contested game producing seven cards and 36 fouls.
Steven Amaya (Oakland Gardens, NY/Martin Luther King) gave Hartwick the lead with his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute of play.
The lead did not last very long as Bowling Green senior Jacob Lawrence scored twice in a seven-minute span to erase the deficit and give the Falcons the lead. A 'Wick foul in the box 3:16 after Amaya's marker awarded BGSU a penalty kick which Lawrence converted past Hawk goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West).
With nine minutes left, Lawrence struck again heading in a Hunter Van Houten corner kick and the hosts grabbed the lead. It marked the first time all season the Hawks have allowed two goals in a match.
Less than two minutes after Bowling Green's go-ahead goal, a Hartwick red card forced the Hawks to play a man down for the remainder of the match. 'Wick continued to press for the tying goal in the closing minutes as Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand/John McGlasham) hit a shot forcing a save from Falcon keeper Dylan Schoettley, who ended the day with seven stops. Hartwick's offensive pressure also produced a pair of always-dangerous Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelburg College) corners. The Hawks' effort paid off as Bowling Green was whistled for a foul in the box giving the Blue and White a spot kick with 4:42 to play. With enormous pressure on his shoulders, Cunningham stepped up and calmly buried the penalty to even the score at 2-2 for his second tally of the season.
The final five minutes brought about no solid scoring chances and the game went to sudden-victory. The Falcons took advantage of their extra field player and outshot the Hawks 3-0 in the first 10-minute session. Lawrence took two of the shots with the other coming from the foot of Zach Lemke. Both of Lawrence's efforts were blocked before reaching the Hartwick frame and Vuolo stopped Lemke's shot for his sixth and final save of the day.
The Hawks were the more aggressive team in the second overtime. Botting took a total of three corners and Sam Wright (Newquay, England/Bryant & Stratton) put a shot over the bar. With just a few ticks left, Nick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston N.) had a shot blocked by a Falcon defender and the match ended in a stalemate.
Hartwick outshot BGSU 19-14 in the match and held the advantage in corners 11-6. The team is idle until next Saturday in its MAC home finale against Western Michigan at 1 p.m. on Elmore Field.
