Hawks Emerge With 2-1 Win Over NIU

ONEONTA, NYNick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston N.) scored off a Dan Summers (Banstead, England) feed with 3:50 left in the game to lift the Hartwick College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Northern Illinois on Saturday at Elmore Field. The Hawks stay perfect in Mid-American Conference play at 2-0 with the victory. They also won their fifth consecutive match for the first time since 2005. NIU falls to 5-4-1 and
0-1 in MAC play.
Summers created the game-winning play after he stole the ball from a Husky defender near the end line on the right side of the goal. The sophomore striker took a few touches and slid a perfect pass along the ground to the penalty spot where Roydhouse ran onto the ball and slammed it to the far post past NIU keeper Jordan Godsey. The Hawks were able to run out the remaining four minutes without allowing the Huskies an opportunity on goal to gain the win.
The Huskies, who trailed for 30 minutes in the second half, battled back to tie the score in the 78th minute. The Hartwick defense cleared a ball out of their own box near midfield. Husky back Franny Otira played a one-timed ball back into the box finding an unmarked Tim King at the back post whose header left Hartwick's Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown W.) no chance.
After a scoreless first half, Hartwick earned a 1-0 lead off a corner kick 130 seconds into the period. Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelburg College) swung a left-footed kick to the far post where Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand/John McGlasham) headed the ball back across the goalmouth. Junior back Nick Pratico (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was at the far post waiting and he out-jumped a pair of NIU defenders to head the ball into the goal for 'Wick's first of the night. It was Pratico's second goal in the last three matches.
Hartwick outshot NIU 15-7 on the night and 9-4 in the second half. Vuolo made one save in the match for the Hawks. Godsey stopped five in a losing effort.
The Hawks hit the road for a non-conference game at Colgate on Oct. 6th at 7 p.m. before returning home a week from tonight against Florida Atlantic at 12 p.m.
