Alfred Hands ’Wick First Loss

          BUFFALO, NY – Empire 8 rival Alfred University received 20 points from guard Lyndsay Murphy and 16 from forward Autumn Mclain in a 73-52 win over Hartwick College's women's basketball team on Friday afternoon at the Buffalo State Betty Abgott Invitational. The victory for the Saxons keeps them unbeaten on the season at 3-0. The Hawks fall to 1-1.
          Hartwick led by a count of 13-8 with 13:33 left on the clock in the first half after senior guard Heather Pruchansky (Naples, FL/Community School of Naples) sank a pair of free throws, but the Saxons went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take the lead for good. Alfred would close the half on a 30-11 run en route to a 38-24 halftime lead.
          Alfred would shoot 47% (15-for-32) from the floor in the first half and the Saxons won the rebounding battle 20-14. Hartwick shot 33% from the field connecting on eight of its 24 shots.                                
          Murphy dropped in 14 points, including four three-point baskets in the opening 20 minutes to lead the Saxons. She also dished out four assists and picked up a pair of steals. Freshman Jalicia Connell (Westbury, NY/Hicksville) dropped in seven points with senior Shamia Dean (Rensselaer, NY/Rennselaer) netting six for the Hawks.
          In the second half, the Alfred lead grew to 19 in the first three minutes and the Saxons would maintain an advantage of at least 13 points the rest of the way.
          Alfred would outscore the Hawks 38-22 in the paint in the game. Hartwick hit 11-of-25 shots in the second half to finish the game shooting 39%. AU would finish the day hitting 45% of its shots.
          Connell finished the game with 15 points and five boards for 'Wick. Dean and Pruchansky each added eight points and Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic) contributed seven. Guard Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) recorded team-highs of six rebounds and four assists.
          McLain would miss a double-double by one rebound with a game-high nine boards to go along with her 16 points. Murphy ended the game with five treys and seven assists.
          The Hawks will play tomorrow at noon in the consolation game against either Sage or the host Bengals. The Saxons play in the championship game at 2 p.m.
