Sage Avenges Loss With 62-52 Win Over Women’s Basketball

BUFFALO, NY – Less than a week after Hartwick's women's basketball team outlasted Sage in overtime at Lambros Arena, the Gators returned the favor, handing 'Wick a 62-52 win in the consolation game of the Buffalo State Betty Abgott Invitational on Saturday. The Hawks received a combined 35 points from senior Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) and freshman Jalicia Connell (Westbury, NY/Hicksville) in the contest.
The first half between the two clubs was close throughout as the score was tied three times and the lead changed hands on seven different occasions. In the second half, the Gators held the lead for the entire 20 minutes and pulled away from the Hawks thanks to a 16-3 run late in the stanza. The spurt turned a one-point Sage lead into a 60-46 game with just a few minutes left in the ball game.
The Hawks shot 29% (17-for-58) from the field and struggled from both three-point range (1-for-10) and the free-throw line (17-for-30). The Gators connected on 25-of-41 shots in the game and connected on 10-for-12 from the line.
Kara Hackett, who netted just four points on Nov. 15 when the Hawks beat Sage, poured in 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Elizabeth Donk also was in double figures with 11 points.
Ploof led Hartwick in points (19) and rebounds (eight). Connell added 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend. Connell, forward Krystle Crouse (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie), and guard Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus) pulled down seven rebounds apiece for the Hawks.
Hartwick (1-2) is back in action at Lambros Arena on Tuesday night. The Hawks host Union College at 6 p.m.
