Hartwick Surges Past Union for 70-62 Victory

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College (2-2) outscored visiting Union (0-1) by 20 points in the second half erasing a 12-point halftime deficit on Tuesday night in a 70-62 win in women's basketball action played at Lambros Arena. The Hawks shot 53.3% from the field in the second half while holding the Dutchwomen to 10-of-28 shooting (35.7%) to earn the win.
Senior Cassie Dresser (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) led four Hartwick players in double figures on the night with 14. Freshman Jalicia Connell (Westbury, NY/Hicksville) netted all 12 of her points in the second half, and Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) and Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus) each scored 10 points in the contest.
Union was paced by Shayla Madden's 17 points. Madden connected on the Dutchwomen's only four three-pointers of the game as the team struggled from behind the arc shooting just 4-of-22 (18%) for the night. Lauren McCormick contributed 14 points for Union and Megan Clark added 10.
The Hawks trailed by 12 points at the half, but a 14-5 run to start the second half cut the Dutchwomen lead to just a point, 43-42, with just five minutes elapsed. Five straight points from Union would strengthen its lead to six points, but another 'Wick 14-2 spurt over the next 2:25 would put the Hawks in front. Flores nailed a three-pointer with 11 minutes left to give Hartwick the advantage for good.
The Dutchwomen twice cut the 'Wick lead to three points. With only 57 seconds left, McCormick converted a layup making the score 65-62. But on the next Hartwick possession, Flores drained another three with 30 seconds left to essentially seal the game. Heather Pruchansky (Naples, FL/Community School of Naples) capped the night's scoring with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left making it a three-possession game.
Hartwick shot season-bests of 41% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line as a team. The Hawks connected on 21 of 28 from the stripe, including 8-of-9 in the second half.
In the first half, Madden scored 12 points and hit three treys to help Union to a 37-25 lead. Clark added eight points and six boards. The Dutchwomen led by nine points before a Hartwick run capped by a Laneka Brown (Spring Glen, NY/Ellenville) bucket shaved the lead to three points, 28-25, with 2:57 left in the half. Union, however, would close the half on a 9-0 run to gain the 12-point edge at the break.
Hartwick next plays on Dec. 1 at home against another Liberty League foe in Skidmore College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
