Hawks Even Up E8 Record With 12-Point Win at Elmira College

ELMIRA, NY – Hartwick's women's basketball team sank the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Saturday by a final score of 68-56 at Speidel Gymnasium in Elmira, NY. The Hawks took the lead for good with one minute left in the first half and fought off a late second-half EC surge to earn the win. The Hawks improve to 3-4 overall and even up their Empire 8 Conference record at 1-1. Elmira falls to 0-4.
In the second half, a three-point play from senior Shamia Dean (Rensselaer, NY/Rensselaer) gave 'Wick an eight-point lead with just over nine minutes left to play. The Soaring Eagles chipped away at the Blue and White's lead over the next four minutes with a 10-3 run. Chelsea Kent's layup for EC with less than five minutes to go made it a one-point game, 55-54.
Hartwick freshman Jalicia Connell (Westbury, NY/Hicksville) then drained a huge three-point basket, her third of the game, on the next trip down the floor to stop the EC run and start an 8-0 'Wick spurt over the next two minutes to put the game away.
Connell would end the game with 18 points and a game-high three steals. Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) led all scorers with 19 points. Both Connell and Ploof also contributed six rebounds each. Krystle Crouse (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) tied for a game-high with 10 boards and Cassie Dresser (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) netted 12 points for Hartwick.
Becca Fretz and Kent were the lone Elmira players to reach double figures. Fretz scored 13 and Kent finished the day with 12. Erin Rupell registered 10 boards.
The Hawks shot just over 40% for the game, hitting 40% in the first half (12-of-30) and 41% in the second (9-of-22). 'Wick also connected on six of its 14 attempts (43%) from three-point range and outrebounded EC 42-39.
The Hawks close out the fall semester with a pair of games against SUNYAC foes next week. Hartwick hosts Oneonta State on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena and then travels to Cortland on December 11th.
