Summers’ Pair Guides Hartwick Men’s Soccer Past #15 Dartmouth

ONEONTA, NY – Sophomore Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar) scored twice to lead Hartwick College's men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over nationally15th ranked Dartmouth on Saturday at Elmore Field. With the victory, the Hawks up their winning streak to four matches and improve to 5-2-1 on the season. The shutout win is 'Wick's fifth of the season. Dartmouth, which entered last week ranked 5th in the country, falls to 4-2-1 with the loss.
Summers opened the scoring in the 40th minute of play following a Hartwick corner kick. Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelberg College) swung the kick into the box where the ball took a series of deflections before popping up in the air enabling Summers to volley it in past Big Green keeper Sean Donovan for a 1-0 lead for the Blue and White.
The score remained the same until the 83rd minute when Summers headed in a direct kick from 30 yards away off the foot of junior Michael Cunningham (Dunedin, New Zealand/John McGlashan HS) to put the game away.
The Big Green ended with an 11-6 edge in shots for the match over the Hawks and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/W. Downingtown) made two saves in each half to earn his fifth shutout for the Hawks. The junior has surrendered just three goals in eight matches.
The victory for Hartwick evens its all-time record with the Big Green at 3-3-0 and avenges last season's 2-1 defeat on a late Dartmouth penalty kick with under a minute to play. It also marks the third time this season 'Wick has disposed of a team that has been ranked in the polls.
Hartwick College returns to Mid-American Conference play next weekend. The Hawks opened the conference season with a solid 3-1 win over Buffalo on Tuesday. 'Wick will host Northern Illinois on Oct. 3. The Huskies, which defeated Hartwick last season 2-1 in Dekalb, IL, are 5-3-1 and playing in their first MAC game of the season.
