Hartwick Draws With Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Despite outshooting Marist by a decisive 21-7 margin, the Hartwick College men's soccer team could not find a goal in regulation or two 10-minute overtimes, settling for a 0-0 tie with their hosts at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie. The Hawks, 1-0 winners over Fordham on Wednesday, are now 1-0-1 on the season. The Red Foxes' are also 1-0-1.
After 90 minutes of scoreless action, the Hawks dominated the first overtime period outshooting Marist by a 4-0 margin. Junior Steven Amaya (Oakland Gardens, NY/Martin Luther King) put a shot high and Nick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston North) had an effort blocked for the Hawks in the first three and a half minutes of the period. Later, freshman Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Berkshire School) sent a shot wide and a Patrick Thompson (Candor, NY/Candor) strike forced a stop from Marist goalkeeper Joe Pilla. Scoring chances were at a premium in the second overtime. Amaya had the lone shot which was blocked.
Jumol Harewood (Brooklyn, NY/Bryant & Stratton) came close to registering his first career tally at 'Wick. The junior forward led the Hawks in shots on the night with six. His best chance of the night came in the 42nd minute of when he struck the post. Both Amaya and Brown finished the night with six shots each for the Blue and White.
'Wick goalie Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) had a relatively quiet night for the second game in a row due in part to the consistent, solid play of backs Brian Gordon (Erskine, Scotland/University of Albany), Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England/Heidelberg College), Konrad Andersson (Helsingborg, Sweden/Filbornaskolan), and Jakob Karlgren (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds). Vuolo was called upon to make just three stops to earn his second straight shutout.
With the tie, Hartwick stays unbeaten against the Red Foxes (7-0-1 all-time). The Hawks have two days off before their home opener against Cornell on Monday at 7 p.m. at Elmore Field.
