ONEONTA, NY - Cornell's Kyle Parsons scored in the last eight minutes of the match to lead the visiting Big Red to a 1-0 win over Hartwick at Elmore Field in Oneonta on Monday night. Cornell improves to 1-1 on the year while the Hawks fall to 1-1-1.
The play began when Shane Merriman sent a cross in from the left side which was redirected to Scott Caldwell. The ball went to Parsons who slipped a shot past an outstretched Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Dowingtown West) for the game-winner. It marked the first goal surrendered by 'Wick this season and snaps Vuolo's shutout streak at 305 minutes dating back to last season.
The Hawks finished the match with a 16-8 advantage in shots, but could not manage to get anything by Big Red goalie Scott Brody, who finished with eight saves.
In the first half, 'Wick peppered Brody with eight shots, including four in a two and a half minute span early in the period, including a low far-post shot from Nick Roydhouse (Palmerston, New Zealand/Palmerston N.) in the 15th minutethat Brody had to dive for to push it over the end line for a corner.
In the second half, Cornell would threaten first. With less than six minutes gone, Vuolo slipped on the turf and brought down Cornell forward Matt Bouraee inside Hartwick box forcing a penalty kick. The threat was averted, however, as Bouraee pushed the penalty wide left.
Hartwick's first opportunity to take the lead in the second half would come in the 21st minute when Patrick Thompson (Candor, NY/Candor) sent a cross inside Cornell's six-yard box. The service met Harewood for a header from in close forcing another Brody save to keep the score level.
Cornell finally broke through Hartwick's defense with 7:54 remaining in the game on Caldwell's tally. The victory is the first of the season for the Big Red (1-1-0) and the first for new head coach Jaro Zawislan.
Harewood recorded six of Hartwick's 16 shots on the night with Roydhouse, Steven Amaya (Oakland Gardens, NY/Martin Luther King), and Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Berkshire School) each registering two. Bouraee provided much of Cornell's offense with six of the team's eight shots.
The Hawks (1-1-1) next match will take place during the 34th annual Mayor's Cup. Wick's first game of the weekend will be Friday Sept. 11th against Bucknell on Elmore Field at 7:30 p.m.
