’Wick Men’s Soccer Team Comes Up Short Against Bowling Green

ONEONTA, NY – Despite holding a 15-7 edge in shots and dictating play throughout much of the game, Hartwick's men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Bowling Green thanks to a second-half Falcon tally on Elmore Field Saturday night. Dusko Topolic scored for the Falcons following a corner kick in the 55th minute for the day's lone tally. BGSU improves to 5-5-2 and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Hawks fall to 2-9-1 and 1-2 in MAC play.
The Hawks out-shot the Falcons 6-4 in the first half of play. One of the Hawks' best chances came in the 33rd minute as junior forward Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar) made a quick spin move at the top of the box. His left-footed shot, however, went over the bar.
Hartwick nearly drew first blood in the first seven minutes of the second half. A cross from the left side of Bowling Green's goal went right in front to sophomore Jherret Maroney (Cincinnatus, NY/Stony Brook. U.) but his shot skimmed wide of the far post.
The Falcons jumped out in front less than three minutes later. Jacob Eganhouse's corner kick found Toplic 12 yards out on the near post. Hartwick keeper Lee Fenner (Altamont, NY/Clayton Bouton) got a piece of Topolic's powerful header but he couldn't keep it out and the Falcons led 1-0.
The Hawks out-shot their opponents 7-2 the rest of the way but could not get the ball past Bowling Green goalkeeper Miguel Rosales. 'Wick players thought they had equalized in the 77th minute as a scramble right in the front of the Falcon goal produced a ball rolling near the goal line. Despite the Hawks' pleas, the linesman did not deem the ball crossed the line and the game remained 1-0 BGSU's favor.
Greg Mathers (Macclesfield, England/Binghamton U.) had the last shot on goal for Hartwick in the 82nd minute. Rosales, however, made his seventh and final save to preserve the shutout and the victory. Fenner would end the match with one save.
The Hawks have three matches in the next eight days, all of which are on the road. 'Wick plays at Brown, which is currently ranked in the national top 10, on Tuesday. The Blue and White then heads to the sunshine state for a non-conference match with Florida International on October 22nd, and a MAC contest at Florida Atlantic two days later.
