PROVIDENCE, RI – Brown scored twice inside 20 minutes and added a second-half goal in a 3-1 victory over Hartwick's men's soccer team Tuesday night in Providence, RI. The Bears, currently ranked #14 in this week's NSCAA national poll, improve to 8-1-3 this season while 'Wick falls to 2-10-1.
The Bears opened the scoring 4:35 into the game as David Walls put his free kick into the top left corner beyond goalie Lee Fenner's (Altamont, NY/CA Bouton) grasp to give the hosts the quick lead. Hartwick had a good opportunity to even the score in the 12th minute. Junior forward Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar) put a solid header just over the Brown crossbar and the game remained 1-0.
Sean Rosa gave Brown an insurance marker at the 19:22 mark. He redirected an Austin Mandel shot, getting a foot on the ball to slip it past Fenner for a 2-0 edge.
Hartwick fought back 5:11 later to cut the Brown lead to a single goal. Sophomore Greg Mathers (Macclesfield, England/Binghamton Univ.) tallied for the first time in a Hartwick uniform as he weaved through a handful of Brown defenders and buried a shot low to the right corner of the Bear goal past keeper Paul Grandstand.
The hosts held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the first half of play. Both teams finished with a pair of corners.
The Hawks came out aggressively in the second half and immediately drew two corners and took two shots in the opening five and a half minutes. Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamiaca/Berkshire School) had a shot blocked and Simon Greatwich (Lewes, England/Lewes Priory) had a header that was stopped by Grandstand in the span.
The momentum swung quickly back to Brown in the 54th minute as Walls scored for the second time of the match to give the Bears some breathing room. Eric Robertson earned an assist on the play.
The Hawks out-shot the Bears 5-2 over the next 15 minutes but could not pull to within one goal.Mathers had a pair of shots saved by Grandstand and Steven Amaya (Oakland Gardens, NY/MLK) had another shot turned away in the span.
Brown would close out the match with a 22-14 edge in shots. The Bears took 10 corners, including eight in the second half, while the Hawks earned four.
Fenner stopped five shots for the Hawks. Grandstand made six to earn the victory.
