Iona Spoils ’Wick Men’s Soccer Opener

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College scored three times in a span of 16 minutes and 28 seconds in the opening half of play en route to a 5-1 victory over Hartwick College's men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, NY. Samuel Adjei led the way for the Gaels with a pair of goals and Mario Rios and Victor Munoz each earned two assists.
The Gaels made the most of their opportunities on the day, especially in the first half of play as they connected on three of their seven shots on the Hartwick goal. The Hawks were outshot by just a 15-11 margin on the day and held a 6-2 edge in corners.
Iona got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute as Franklin Castellanos tallied from Rios, and just over five minutes later Adjei netted his first of the day to give the Gaels some early breathing room.
Later, the Hawks were whistled for a penalty in the box with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. The ensuing Mario Di Miceli penalty kick was saved by Hartwick senior goalkeeper Jake Wright (Los Angeles, CA/Cal State Northridge), but the rebound came right back to Di Micheli who put the Gaels up 3-0 just before the half.
Munoz would set up Douglas Stephens early in the second half at the 54 minute mark, but junior forward Dan Summers (Banstead, England/Sutton Grammar), the Hawks' top scorer last season, gave the Hawks life with an assisted tally less than six minutes later. In the 67th minute, Adjei would close out the scoring as he netted his second with Castellanos picking up the helper.
Wright finished the match with two saves in the Hartwick goal. Jesse Fullerton and Michael Jordan combined to make four saves for Iona.
The match was just the second meeting between the Gaels and Hawks all-time. Hartwick came away with a 5-2 win back in 2000.
Hartwick returns to action on Monday, September 6th in Ithaca, NY. The Hawks will play at Cornell University at 7 p.m. 'Wick has won 30 times over the Big Red in 46 meetings, but the Blue and White will look to avenge last season's 1-0 defeat last season on Elmore.
