Ithaca Defeats Hartwick in Women’s Basketball

ITHACA, NY – Hartwick's women's hoop team trailed by seven points with 12 minutes to go in the game but a 26-12 run by Ithaca to close the game would give the Bombers a 73-52 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks, who fall to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play, were led by senior Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and freshman Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) who each netted 13 points.
In the first half of play, the Hawks were down 16-11, but two three-pointers from Kate Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic), a basket from Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy), and two free throws from Foglia fueled a 10-4 run to give 'Wick a 21-20 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. The Bombers, who improve to 12-5 and 8-0 in the Empire 8, ended the first half of play on a 13-7 run for a 35-28 edge at the half.
In the second half, the Hawks trailed by as many as 12 points in the early going but battled back to cut the Ithaca advantage to seven, 47-40, on a Purcell basket with 12:06 to play. The IC defense would force five straight turnovers on Hartwick's next five possessions before Samantha Fox (Hartwick, NY/Cooperstown) hit a layup with nine minutes left. The Bombers had already built a double-digit lead, however, and the Hawks would finish the game with only two more field goals.
Foglia ended the game with a double-double, adding a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with her 13 points. She also dished out four assists. Flores added four boards and three assists, and Veit recorded nine points, all on three-pointers. Purcell registered eight points and Fox closed out the day with six.
Ithaca got game-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds from Elissa Klie. She also had four assists and four steals. Devin Shea netted nine points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Bombers held a 42-24 edge in rebounds, including 16 offense boards which they converted into 20 second-chance points. The Hawks hit 36% from the floor as a team and 39% (7-for-18) form beyond the three-point arc. IC shot 47% and 45% from three-point range.
Hartwick returns to action on Tuesday night in the friendly confines of Lambros Arena. The Hawks host Stevens Institute of Technology (13-2, 6-1 E8) with tip-off beginning at 6 p.m.
