Men’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH – Hartwick fought back from a first-half deficit to secure a difficult 1-1 road tie against Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference men's soccer on Saturday night in Ohio. Jherrett Maroney (Cincinnatus, NY/Stony Brook) tallied for the Hawks early in the second half to forge the draw. The Hawks and Falcons remain tied for third place in the MAC standings, each with a 1-1-1 mark.
Hartwick (5-5-3) had several opportunities toward the end of regulation to get the game-winner but Falcon goalie Miguel Rosales made several spectacular saves to keep the game even. BGSU turned the tables on the Hawks in the overtime periods, out-shooting them by a 6-1 margin, including a header that hit the Hartwick crossbar.
“We showed a tremendous amount of character in the second half,” said John Scott. “We were connecting our passes extremely well and we were very unlucky not to get the game-winner in regulation. In fairness, however, they did hit the bar in the overtime so perhaps a draw was the right result.”
Hartwick started the game off as the more dangerous team as the Hawks fired three of the night's first four shots in the opening 10 minutes. The Falcons would counter with a header off the crossbar in the 14th minute from Joey D'Agostino.
Less than seven minutes from halftime, Bowling Green (7-4-3) took the lead. Danny Baraldi served a left-side cross in to Colin Armstrong who scored from 18 yards out past Hartwick goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) for a 1-0 lead.
Hartwick drew level less than 10 minutes into the second half as Maroney tallied the second goal of his career at Hartwick at the 53:57 mark. He received the ball 10 yards from goal, spun, and fired past Rosales to even the match. Jason Keefe (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) and Will Broomfield (Brighton, England/Cloud Community College) earned assists on the play.
Later in the second half, the Hawks had multiple opportunities to add their second goal as they out-shot the Falcons 6-1 over the final 13 minutes of regulation. Jhevaughn Beckford (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys) had the first chance as he slashed diagonally from the left side and fired a left-footed, out-swinging shot to the far post, but Rosales got his fingertips to it to push the ball wide.
Cleyon Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Berkshire School) then walked in with Rosaleswith less than eight minutes left but the BGSU keeper made the stop once again. Broomfieldhad one last chance for the Hawks just two minutes later but Rosales was up to the challenge yet again.
The overtime was a different story as the Falcons forced the action. Just over a minute into the period, Bowling Green nearly won it as the hosts stole the ball in the Hawks' end and a service in the box allowed Ryan Snashall a header that struck the bar. The Falcons had all three shots in the first overtime but could not convert.
“I think we were just spent in the overtime periods,” added Scott. “We put so much into the match, we didn't have much left.”
In the second overtime, BGSU had a 3-1 edge in shots but it was a no-call that came closest to deciding the winner. Sophomore Tim Crawford (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) played a short ball in the box behind the Falcon defense to Brown with roughly four minutes left in the second extra session. A Falcon defender upended Brown and the official was on the verge of calling for a Hartwick penalty kick but he rescinded and the game ended 1-1.
“I thought it was a penalty,” said Scott. “But, we won't dwell on it. It's very difficult to go on the road and get a point and we did that tonight so we're pleased.”
The Falcons ended the match with a slim 15-14 edge in shots. The Hawks held a 13-9 advantage after regulation.
Munarriz finished the match with three saves. Michael Wiest, who started the game in goal for the Falcons, did not make a save in 45 minutes. Rosales stopped three shots in the final 65 minutes.
Hartwick next plays at home on Saturday, October 29 against Western Michigan in another MAC contest. The game begins on Elmore Field at 3 p.m.
