Hawks Fight Back in Second Half to Earn 64-62 Win Over Nazareth

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick battled back from a 12-point second-half deficit to drop Nazareth College 64-62 on Saturday afternoon at Lambros Arena. With the win, the Hawks improve to 8-13 overall and 5-8 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Freshman Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) scored 17 of her career-high 23 points in the second half to key the comeback, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:01 left in the game. She added six rebounds and hit 13-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Acad.) and Kate Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) each added 11 points for Hartwick.
The Hawks trailed by 13 points, 25-12, with 5:54 to go in the first half of play before going on an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to three points just three minutes later. Veit hit two three-pointers and Purcell made one in the run. A 9-0 Naz run to close the half gave the visitors a 12-point, 35-23 edge at the intermission.
In the second half, Hartwick methodically chipped away at the lead until Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic) connected on a three-pointer to tie the score at 59-59 with 3:03 to play. After a stop on the defensive end, Foglia sank a pair from the line to give 'Wick its first lead but the Golden Flyers evened the score with two free throws of their own on their next trip down the floor to tie it at 61.
Both teams missed chances to take the lead but Foglia came through for the Hawks with 1:01 to play, nailing her second three of the game from the top of the key to put her team up to stay. Naz had a chance to tie it but their three-point attempt was off the mark.
The Golden Flyers got the ball back and with a three-point lead the Hawks fouled with six seconds left. Jenee Vanderstyne made one of two free throws and Naz fouled Samantha Fox (Hartwick, NY/Cooperstown) with 3.5 seconds left. She missed both but disrupted the Golden Flyers' defensive rebound and they never made it up court for a potential game-winning basket.
The Hawks made 37% of their shots in the game. They also hit nine three-point baskets which was their second-highest output of the season. Naz made 44% of its shots. The two teams tied in the rebounding department 34-34.
The Golden Flyers were led by Brittany Patenaude's 13 points. She was the only player in double digits for the visitors.
Hartwick next plays on Tuesday at Stevens. The game is set for 6 p.m.
